We've equipped some Skinny modems with remote testing capabilities. This technology tests the quality of our customers' internet connections. We'll use this data to gain a better understanding of how our customers’ internet connections are performing and the sorts of things we can do to give you better broadband services.
Is my connection being tested?
The tests are being rolled out for Skinny Futura Modems used by customers on Wireless Broadband plans. If you're a Wireless Broadband customer with one of these modems, you don't need to do anything. Once the software is installed, you won't notice anything different about your connection.
How do the tests work?
The tests check metrics relating to how your internet connection is performing. They measure things like, your connection’s download and upload speeds, latency, and whether your connection is dropping data.
Don't worry. The tests don't collect information about how you are using your internet connection or the websites, applications or platforms that you go on. These tests will only run when you’re not using your broadband connection.
What technology is being used to run these tests?
Skinny is using software from SamKnows to run the tests. SamKnows is a trusted global leader in speed testing and internet performance analysis, providing reliable data on internet connection metrics. They allow organisations like Skinny to make informed decisions on how to improve internet connectivity.
SamKnows software is already being used by the New Zealand Commerce Commission as part of the Measuring Broadband New Zealand programme.

The front of your Skinny Futura Modem has 4 indicator lights: WiFi, 4G LTE, Internet, Phone.
On the left side of the Skinny Futura Modem is the WPS button and the LED light ON/OFF push button.
On the back of the Skinny Futura Modem are the connection ports and two stickers. One sticker has the details of the WiFi login and Modem gateway login. The other sticker has the Broadband Number, Verification Code, and SIM Serial Number.

Under the Skinny Futura Modem is the device information, including the IMEI and Serial Number. Under the protective cover is the SIM card connector.

How to set up your modem
- 1. For the best connection, put the modem on a windowsill or close to a window and away from other electrical devices to give it some breathing space.
- 2. Plug your modem into a power outlet using the black cable provided in the box. Wait for the modem to connect to our Skinny wireless network. This may take several minutes.
- 3. Check the colour of the 4G LTE LED indicator on the front of the modem which will turn green when connection is at optimal performance.
If the 4G LTE light isn't green, move your modem closer to a window for a better signal.

For wireless connections you'll need to know your WiFi network name (SSID) and WiFi password.
To protect your WiFi network, your modem comes with a pre-configured password. Only devices that have connected using this password will have access to your WiFi network.
You can find the default password on the back of your modem.
If you change your WiFi password or forget what it is, you can factory reset your modem to restore it to the default WiFi password.
How to connect via wireless devices
- 1. Find the sticker on your modem with the WiFi name and password.
- 2. On your computer, tablet or mobile device, go to the wireless connections settings and search for available networks.
- 3. Select your modem's name from the list of networks "FUTURA-XXXXXXXXX." Enter the modem's WiFi password when prompted.
You're now connected to your WiFi network.
How to connect via wired devices
To give you the best possible speeds and reliability, we recommend using Ethernet whenever possible. An Ethernet cable is included with your Skinny Futura modem.
- 1. Connect one end of the ethernet cable to one of the modem's Ethernet ports (labelled LAN 1 - 4).
- 2. Connect the other end of the cable into your device.
You're now connected to your modem via Ethernet.
After setting up and connecting your device to the modem, you’ll be directed to a web page to activate your Skinny Wireless Broadband account. You'll only have to do this once.
Enter your registered email address and password. You'll also need your Broadband number and Verification code. Look for a sticker on your modem to find this information.

There are four LED lights on the Skinny Futura Modem: WiFi, 4G LTE, Internet and Phone. These lights may flash and/or change colour depending on what's happening.
Skinny Wireless Broadband doesn't come with a landline, so you don't need to worry about the Phone LED light on this modem.

This is because modem is in a position where it's getting little or no 4G signal from a 4G cell tower. You'll need to place the modem in a different location to get a good signal.
Try shifting the modem to another place in your home. Near a window will help maximise the signal strength from the cell tower to your modem.

Make sure that you're already connected to the modem by an ethernet cable plugged into a laptop or PC (recommended option), or by WiFi.
- 1. Open any web browser such as Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Safari.
- 2. In the address bar, type 192.168.1.254 and press enter.
- 3. Enter your modem login information.
- By default, the User name and Password will both be admin.
- The login information is also located on the back or bottom of your modem.
- By default, the User name and Password will both be admin.
- 4. Select WLAN from the left hand menu.
- 5. In the WiFi Name field, enter your new WiFi network name.
- 6. In the WiFi Password field, enter your new WiFi network password.
- Note: If the device you're using to change the WiFi details is connected via WiFi, changing these settings will disconnect you from the WiFi when you save the settings. Reconnect using the new WiFi name and/or password.
- 7. Select Save Settings
Your WiFi network name and password are now updated.
Any new devices and any old devices that were previously connected to the WiFi, can now join using the new WiFi name and password.
Locate the best WiFi channel for you.
Changing channels can often reduce WiFi interference. This can be especially useful if you live in an apartment with a lot of WiFi networks nearby. To get an idea of which channels are already in use in your home or nearby, you can find mobile apps to download on Apple and Google app stores.
- 1. Open any web browser such as Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Safari.
- 2. In the address bar, type 192.168.1.254 and press enter.
- 3. Enter your modem login information.
- By default, the Username and Password will both be admin.
- This information is also located on the bottom of your modem.

- 4. Select WLAN from the left-hand side.
- 5. Select WLAN 2.4GHz tab from the menu bar.
- 6. Update the WiFi channel in the Channel field by selecting a new channel from the dropdown menu.
- 7. Select Save Settings
To adjust the 5GHz WiFi network channel, repeat steps 5 - 7 for WLAN 5GHz tab.
Your WiFi channel is now updated. We recommend trying it out for at least two hours before changing WiFi channels again.

WPS allows you to easily connect your wireless devices (computer, laptop, mobile phone etc.) to your modem without having to enter the WiFi password.
- 1. Open any web browser such as Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Safari.
- 2. In the address bar, type 192.168.1.254 and press enter
- 3. Enter your modem login information.
- By default, the Username and Password will both be admin.
- This information is also located on the bottom of your modem.

- 4. Select WLAN from the left-hand menu
- 5. Select WPS from the menu bar
- 6. Tick the Enable WLAN 2.4GHz and WLAN 5GHz options
- 7. Select Save settings
- 8. Select Start PBC. WPS will now be enabled
- 9. On your mobile device, go to your WiFi settings and choose WPS PIN Entry (it’s possible that it might be listed under a similar name). Your mobile device will connect via WPS to your Skinny Futura Modem.
Apple devices do not allow WPS connections to be made.

Factory reset using the reset button
Follow these steps to factory reset your Skinny Futura modem. Please note that by factory resetting your modem, any changes you've made to the modem settings will be restored back to default. This includes your WiFi network name and password.
- 1. Make sure your modem is powered or switched on.
- 2. Insert a paper clip or pin into the reset hole on the back of the modem.

- 3. Push in the paper clip or pin for 10 to 15 seconds and then take it out.
- 4. After a few seconds the LED lights will turn off and modem will reboot on its own.
- 5. The power light will start flashing green to indicate that the factory reset is in progress.
- 6. When all the LED lights are green again, the modem has been fully reset.
Please note that factory resetting your modem does not reset the modem firmware to an earlier version. It will only change the settings and configurations back to factory default.
Factory reset using modem interface
Make sure that you're already connected to the modem by an ethernet cable plugged into a laptop or PC (recommended option), or by WiFi.
- 1. Open any web browser such as Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Safari
- 2. In the address bar, type 192.168.1.254 and press enter.
- 3. Enter your modem login information.
- By default, the User name and Password will both be admin.
- The login information is also located on the back of your modem.
- By default, the User name and Password will both be admin.
- 4. Select Adminstration from the left hand side.
- 5. Select Restore/Save/Upload Setting.
- 6. Select Restore to Factory Defaults
- 7. Select OK and then OK again to confirm the factory restart of your modem.
All the settings and configurations on your modem will reset to default and your modem will automatically reboot.
The warranty is for 24 months from the purchase date on the purchase order that you will receive when the modem is delivered to you.
